Otoplasty: correcting protruding ears
The appearance of protruding ears often has significant psychological and social repercussions. Otoplasty can be performed once the size and shape of the ear have stabilized (ideally from age 10-12). The procedure not only alters the position of the ear, which is repositioned against the skull (to correct the "detached" effect), but also reshapes the relief of the auricle.
Scars are hidden behind the ear. The procedure usually begins by modifying the external appearance of the ear to give it a more harmonious shape. This is followed by the creation of a space behind the ear so that the cartilage can be brought towards the skull and secured with stitches. Once the procedure is complete, a bandage is applied to both ears, which is maintained for 48 hours. Pain is generally very moderate, and only requires paracetamol.
Any significant pain experienced after the procedure should prompt the patient to consult the surgeon as soon as possible to check for hematoma. Stitches are generally removed 12 days after surgery.
Wearing a headband that maintains the position of the ears is essential day and night for one month, then only at night for a further month.
