Thread lifts, a temporary alternative to facelifts

Thread lifts are a temporary alternative to facelifts. They generally involve the use of absorbable threads that remain effective for around 12 months. These threads are barbed so that they adhere to the skin and provide traction that mimics (usually in a less dramatic way) the effects of a facelift in the treated area. Treatment with thread lifts can correct jowls, marionette lines and nasolabial folds. It can also lift the cheekbones or eyebrows. The latest generation of threads also treats fine lines around the lips, wrinkles on the cheeks and even the décolleté. The threads are inserted under local anaesthetic at Dr Ihrai’s practice. It is essential to avoid taking aspirin or anti-inflammatory drugs for 5 days prior to treatment. Preparation with arnica and anti-oedema treatment is started a few days beforehand, especially for patients who bruise easily. To correct fine lines or wrinkles, a mesh is created using fine threads. This mesh is particularly effective in inducing collagen production by the body, which helps to correct these fine lines. To achieve a lifting effect, 3 to 5 threads are inserted under the skin, which is then gently tightened by the surgeon.

Treatment with thread lifts is relatively painless. Small marks or creases may appear on the skin, but these usually disappear after 3 to 5 days.

During the following 15 days, it is recommended to avoid intense physical activity and any overly vigorous facial treatments or massages in order to prevent the threads from shifting.
